About the Guest Speakers:
Aya Mariyam Rahil Naseem, co-founder of the Maldives Coral Institute, is a marine biologist from the Maldives. Since 2019, she has spearheaded conservation and advocacy projects to preserve coral reefs in the Maldives. Her work involves raising public awareness and engaging with stakeholders, local communities, and international organizations. Aya has successfully implemented several coral propagation projects and community training programs across the Maldives. Aya also made history in 2021 by becoming the first-ever Women's National Champion in the Maldives, winning the SEASPORTS Rannamaari Challenge 1443 - National Surfing Championship 2021.
Hassan Ahmed, also known as Beybe, is the President of Save the Beach, one of the most prominent environmental NGOs in the Maldives. Save the Beach began as a movement to clean up the beach and lagoon of Villimale Island, Kaafu Atoll, in 2007. Beybe and his team successfully collected over three tonnes of garbage from the island's beach and lagoon when they first started. Since its inception in 2012, the organisation has expanded its work from beach cleanups to encompass conservation efforts, reef research, coral planting, turtle research, waste audits, and awareness-raising workshops in schools and communities. Save the Beach successfully relocated coral colonies from a reclamation site in Himmafushi to another location within the same lagoon in 2016. They also established coral gardens at Meeru Island Resort in 2017 and Palm Beach Resort earlier this year.
